Lith Prints

Ordering

Each lith print is a unique, hand-crafted creation.  I create these prints in my own darkroom and each print takes several hours to create.  For this reason lith prints are ordered direct from me and will take two to four weeks before delivery.  The end result should last a lifetime as lith prints are made archivally permanent using selenium and gold toners.

To order your print please e-mail me the names of the prints you require and the size you would prefer and I will e-mail you details about how to pay via PayPal or cheque.  Prints are available in 8x10 and 16x12 inch sizes.  The print will have a border around the edge of 1 to 2 cm.  This border may be off white due to the nature of lith printing.

Prices
8x10 prints are priced at 80 GB Pounds each and 16x12 prints are 100 GB Pounds each.

Delivery to the UK is 5 GB Pounds for 8x10 prints and 7 GB Pounds for 16x12s.  Delivery to the rest of the world will be at cost and I can confirm details once I have received your order.

Creating your unique print
For those interested in the process, here are the steps involved in creating your lith print:

Exposing the enlargement through my enlarger for between one and two minutes onto Kentmere Kentona (gloss), Foma Fomatone MG (gloss) or Foma Chamois 542 (matte) double weight fibre-based paper.

Developing the print in a special lith developer for fifteen minutes to forty-five minutes.  The print must be constantly agitated during development.

Snatching the print from the developer at the exact moment that the print is ready.  Even a few seconds delay can result in a ruined print.  The exact point of snatch changes even when printing the same print twice in succession as the developer depletes very quickly.

Once the print has been snatched from the developer it is quickly washed in a 'stop' solution for thirty seconds before being 'fixed' for one minute.

Once I have a collection of four to six prints I then wash them in an archival washer for forty minutes.

Once washed the prints are toned in selenium toner until the required tonality has been achieved.  Selenium toner creates a wonderful range of tones with lith prints on my preferred Kentmere Kentona paper.  As with the development process, the print must be snatched at the exact moment when the preferred tones have been creating or the print will be ruined.

The print is then washed again for thirty minutes.

If the print is then to be toned in gold toner to turn the highlights blue, I will tone each print in the gold toner, again snatching the print at the exact moment that the desired results have been achieved.  The prints are then washed once more for thirty minutes.

The prints are now dried for twelve hours before being pressed for twenty-four hours to ensure that they lie reasonably flat.

As you can see, this is quite a long process!  The result is a print that is unique and hand crafted specifically for you.
